Northcroft Lido
Structural Renovations Limited have recently completed extensive works at the refurbished Northcroft Lido in Newbury, Berkshire.
The pool was originally constructed in 1870 and features on the 1st edition of the Ordinance Survey map from 1880-1881.
The pool was enlarged 1914 and then completely rebuilt in 1937. At the time it was understood to be the largest pool in England at over 70m long.
Having been sited on a flood plain the lido has suffered over the years, with the rise and fall water levels, resulting in excessive movement of the pool structure and an almost constant need for maintenance. Unfortunately, this meant the facility was often closed, even when the weather was fine.
Initial Survey and Advice
We were initially employed in 2020 to assist in providing advice to various interested parties on ground stabilisation and waterproofing. This enabled the ultimate client, West Berkshire Council to develop 3 options, which led to a consultation in summer 2021.
The final decision taken was to shorten the pool to 50m and add children’s play facilities, including slides and a splash pad.
The pool was shortened and the depth reduced. In addition, piles were installed, through the new and old floor slab, to tie them together before being driven into the ground beneath. These works were completed by Universal Group, who were employed as the Principal Contractor.
Structural Renovations Start on Site in Late 2022
We finally commenced on site in Autumn 2022 and the first operation was to grit blast all surfaces, to remove the existing coatings and provide a suitable key for subsequent operations.
The prepared areas were then repaired as necessary and waterproofed using a two-component elastic cementitious membrane system.
All products used were manufactured by Mapei SpA, an Italian company which operates globally and who we are an approved installer for.
Our works were completed within the desired programme period and following our demobilisation the complex was fully fitted out with play equipment, changing areas and landscaping, allowing Northcroft Lido to open for business 21st August 2023.
It was a privilege to work on a site with a history of over 150 years and to see it brought up to date for the people of Berkshire and beyond…
